Living in Georgia, there are plenty of summer mornings when it is already hot before breakfast. The kind of mornings where stepping outside for five minutes somehow makes you feel like you need another shower immediately afterward.

Or as my mom would say, “glowing,” because apparently we were not supposed to use the word “sweat.”

That is exactly where this Cucumber Blueberry Basil Smoothie fits in.

It is light, crisp, and cooling without feeling heavy or overly rich. The cucumber gives it a fresh clean taste, the blueberries add a little sweetness, and the basil and lime wake everything up just enough to make it feel refreshing on a hot morning.

I intentionally keep this refreshing summer smoothie thinner and lighter than many smoothie recipes. On a Georgia summer morning, I personally do not want something thick and creamy sitting in my stomach while I am already trying to cool down from the humidity outside. I want something cold, fresh, and easy to drink while standing barefoot in the kitchen pretending I am somehow going to stay cool all day.

Adding unflavored protein powder gives it a little staying power without changing the fresh flavor too much. It turns this into an easy breakfast or mid-morning snack that feels nourishing without becoming overly filling.

One of my favorite things about this smoothie is that the main ingredients can all come straight from the garden.

There is something deeply satisfying about stepping outside and picking basil, cucumbers, and blueberries you grew yourself – knowing exactly how and where they were grown. It does not have to be a huge garden either. A patio container counts. A basil plant on a windowsill counts. Growing even one ingredient yourself somehow makes the whole experience feel more connected and intentional.

Of course, store-bought ingredients work perfectly well too. No smoothie judgment here.

Lately, I have also been experimenting with ways to preserve extra produce from the garden. I recently ordered the Masontops Fermentation Kit because I want to try fermenting vegetables, pickles, and maybe even fruit. I honestly think fermented blueberries in this smoothie could be incredible someday. Slightly tangy blueberries with the basil and lime? I feel like there is potential there.

We will call that a future kitchen experiment.

Why You’ll Love This Cucumber Blueberry Basil Smoothie

  • Light and refreshing – This is not an ultra-thick milkshake-style smoothie. It is cool, fresh, and easy to drink.
  • Garden friendly – Cucumbers, basil, and blueberries are all things many people can grow at home during the warmer months.
  • Flexible – You can easily adjust the sweetness, protein, or creaminess depending on what you enjoy.
  • Fast – Four minutes. That is it. Some breakfasts are worth lingering over. Others just need to get you out the door feeling human again.

Can I make substitutions?

Yes!

For a creamier smoothie you can add plain yogurt or substitute yogurt for the protein powder entirely. Just note that depending on the yogurt you use, the protein content may change.

Strawberries could be substituted for the blueberries as well. This will give it a different flavor of course, but would go well with the cucumber and basil.

What kind of protein powder should I use?

You can use any unflavored protein powder you enjoy. I personally like the Jay Robb line of protein powders because they use grass-fed whey protein, are cleaner, and their flavors taste less artificial to me than many other brands I’ve tried. You can get the unflavored protein powder here. Their unflavored version works especially well when you want the fresh ingredients to shine instead of tasting like vanilla birthday cake.

What kind of blender should I use?

We somehow ended up with three blenders in this house, which feels slightly ridiculous until you realize they all do different things.

My go-to for smoothies is still my Vitamix. It is powerful and easy to use and clean. I’ve had it for at least 15 years or more and let me tell you, I’ve put it through ALOT and it still blends like a champ!

We also have a Ninja portable blender that recharges using a USB port – super handy for smoothies on the go like taking to sport events or work. It would work well for this recipe too.

Then there is my beloved Cuisinart “stick” handheld blender which I adore for soups and gravies. It could handle this smoothie, but it wouldn’t be my first choice, simply because it would be a bit more work on my part to use and then clean it.

Sometimes convenience wins.

Instructions

  1. Blend cucumber, blueberries, basil, and the rest of the ingredients together until smooth.
  2. Pour into two glasses and enjoy!

Note

A Small Blender Tip

Try not to crank the blender speed too high for this smoothie. These ingredients blend pretty easily on their own, and higher speeds can whip too much air into the mixture, making it overly frothy instead of smooth and refreshing.

A lower speed works beautifully here.
